Description: In this webinar, you will learn and review medications while breastfeeding, addressing safety concerns and supporting breastfeeding for families affected by substance use disorder.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the benefits of breastfeeding for the birthing person and for the infant
- Discuss the in utero effects of substance use and substance use disorder to contextualize breastfeeding decision-making
- Contextualize breastfeeding decision-making in the setting of prenatal substance exposure, including a review of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine’s 2023 guidance
- Discuss current evidence regarding substance use disorder treatment in the context of post-partum health care, including contingency management related to breast milk
- Examine the challenges of supporting breast milk feeding for mothers and infants who are separated (i.e. incarceration or DCF custody)
- Review safe handling recommendations for expressed breast milk
