August 19, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The webinar will feature presentations on Medically Complex Pediatrics (Kirin Noelle Suri, MD, MPH, speaker) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (Hassan M. Minhas, MD, speaker).
Medically Complex Pediatrics
Young children who are raised in institutions and those who experience extreme social neglect can develop aberrant social behaviors that may result from an attachment disorder. This presentation will broadly explore attachment theory and attachment disorders and will review implications for clinical practice.
Speaker – Kirin Noelle Suri, MD, MPH – Dr. Kirin Suri serves as Chief of Pediatrics at Hospital for Special Care. She is also a graduate of the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, an interdisciplinary leadership training program funded by the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health. Her diverse clinical experiences led her to the only long term acute care treatment resource for children and adolescents in Connecticut. The pediatric unit at Hospital for Special Care is one of only two resources in the country for children requiring this level of care. In addition to complex pediatric care, Dr. Suri’s possesses a strong interest in clinical research and has been a principle investigator on a funded grant proposal seeking to clarify the role of audiovisual integration and mother-infant communication as early markers of Autism Spectrum Disorder in children under one year of age.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
The session features an overview of the behaviors, communication challenges, and critical care requirements of children impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder in today’s health care system including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on care, stability in the community and family functioning. The session will explore the need for interdisciplinary care during inpatient stays as well as in the community upon discharge.
