An Autism Primer for the PCP: What to Expect, When to Refer Wednesday, November 9th - 12:10 to 1:00PM (PART 1 of 6 part series) Autism Spectrum Disorders are now being recognized in increasing numbers of children. Autism is being seen in such numbers (1 in 68 children) that every pediatric practice in the state of Connecticut will have several patients with this diagnosis. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Update: New and Changing Definitions Tuesday, November 15th - 12:10 to 1:00PM Prenatal Alcohol exposure is common and the incidence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders may be as high as 2% of the general population. These disorders tend to be underrecognized in children, particularly in high risk groups such as children in foster care or other out of home placements. This presentation will review updated information about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders including updated diagnostic criteria. In this talk, the different diagnoses included under the umbrella of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders will be defined. The epidemiology of FASDs, ways to screen for prenatal alcohol use in pediatric practice, evidence-based interventions for children with significant prenatal alcohol exposure and practical tips for pediatricians in practice will be reviewed. Anxiety First Aid - Office Based Strategies for Children and Parents Friday, December 16th - 12:10 to 1:00PM Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problems in youth but often go undetected for long periods of time after the onset of the disorder. Primary care providers who are equipped to identify childhood anxiety problems and to provide children and parents with brief, practical, and effective tools can be crucial to ameliorating the course of a child's anxiety. This webinar will focus on such brief, office-based, strategies. From knowing what questions to ask, to what advice to give to parents, and to what tools a child can learn in 1-2 minutes that can help with coping with anxiety.
