Strengthening Sickle Cell Trait Care in Connecticut: A New Statewide Initiative

Nov. 20, 2025 12:00 PM Eastern

Description

Each year, approximately 1,000 newborns in Connecticut are identified with sickle cell trait (SCT), yet follow-up rates remain extremely low, and most families never receive genetic counseling about their child's results. This session will introduce Connecticut’s new statewide workflow designed to strengthen follow-up care for infants identified through newborn screening with SCT or hemoglobin C trait. Participants will learn what actions to take to address key challenges in communication and confirmatory testing and how stakeholders can work together to ensure families receive timely information, support, and genetic counseling.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of identifying and communicating sickle cell trait and hemoglobin C trait results.
  2. Compare the previous and new Connecticut workflows for SCT follow-up, including provider responsibilities.
  3. Identify strategies to improve family engagement, confirmatory testing, and access to genetic counseling for infants with SCT.
