Barbara Ziogas, MD, FAAP

Biosketch

Dr. Barbara Ziogas is board certified in Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  She received her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and served her residency at the University of Connecticut, where she stayed an additional year as Chief Pediatric Resident.  

Dr. Ziogas began practicing pediatrics in the FarmingtonArea in 1995 and has been an involved member of the medical community since then.  She is an active member of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and serves on the Executive Board as Secretary.  She is an active member of the Section on Administration and Practice Management (SOAPM), and is a member of the Council on School Health (COSH).  

Before deciding to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a pediatrician, she was a special education teacher.  This background has served her well in treating children with special health care needs and educational challenges.   She is dedicated to the health and well-being of children and their families, and practices medicine in a way that looks at the whole child in their environment.  She is passionate about pain management and strategies for reduction of discomfort for procedures such as injections.  Dr. Ziogas has been the Chair of the CT AAP School Health Committee since 2017, and  serves as the Medical Advisor for the Farmington Public Schools, Simsbury Schools, Canton Schools and  CREC (Capital Region Education Center) Schools.  She is the Medical Advisor for the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford.  

Sharing her love of pediatrics, she has been teaching medical students since her Chief Residency, and has been a site director for the UCONN Pediatric Clerkship since 1998.  She is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.    

Since 2001 she has traveled many times to Tobati, Paraguay where she has had the good fortune to be able to do mission work in collaboration with Team Tobati.  She has forged wonderful and lifelong relationships as a result of these endeavors.  Dr. Ziogas is a member of the Gold Humanism in Medicine Society and is honored to have been a recipient of the Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.  She has also been awarded the Hartford Hospital Humanitarian award. 

Dr. Ziogas is the mother of three grown children, three beautiful grandchildren , and three equally beautiful step-grandchildren.  Dr. Ziogas enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, reading, attending concerts, nature, doing volunteer work, and above all, advocating for children.
